Hey all,
I’m writing a story about Sydney’s crackdown on street performances on George Street. Although I think the reporting has been fairly favourable to street performers so far, it’s still pretty inadequate.
Let’s change that.
If you’re a street performer in Sydney, please answer any of the the following questions, or just give me your general thoughts:
On June 26th, were you notified about the public exhibition of proposed rules changes? Did you understand them at the time?
Do you think the government has clearly stated its aims? Have you spoken to (or heard of) any other street performers saying they understood this was coming?
There were just 14 responses to the city’s public submission. Only 4 of them came from street performers. 0 of them complained about the pitch changes. Why do you think this is the case?
How many of Sydney’s top busking pitches for musicians have now been shut down? Is it a handful? Most of them? Which are the best pitches that are now banned? Were there safety concerns around those specific ‘best’ pitches?
What else would you like Sydney to know?
How long have you been busking in Sydney?
What has busking in Sydney done for your livelihood, your career, your life?
Please provide responses with your name and—if you want it included—a photo of your performance. Let me know if you don’t want to be mentioned.
Thanks,
Nick
